

With the exception of the steady decline of the market after 1929, virtually every major short-term sell-off in the market has been followed by a rebound. The rebound is usually between 50 and 70 of the previous maximum. You can see this pattern in the aftermath of both 1987 (which rapidly moved past the previous high) and 2001 and 2002 (where the rebound was temporary and further losses followed).
Either way, the market is likely to remain in recovery mode for at least the next two weeks, since the rebound is always longer than the sell-off.
